Saori Obata, the Japanese left handed player was ranked 126 when she visited India for the WTA Indian Open Last year. With a year of blazing efforts Saori has obliterated opponents on the courts and is returning to India this February ranked at 55 on the WTA. She is number 5 seeded at the Indian Open this year and if she stands true to her trail of conquer, Obata is about to display an eventful and action-filled court game, while trying to reach out to the WTA title at Hyderabad.
At her present career high, Obata comes to India equipped with a bounty of a WTA Doubles Title already under her belt, 4 ITF Women’s Circuit Singles titles and 9 ITF doubles titles. Its going to be an interesting tournament in India when the hard court favouring Japanese takes on the masters of clay. Loosing to Tulyaganova in the second rough last year here in India, Saori spiced up her chart when she trounced 4th seeded Stevenson to reach the Memphis QF. By September of 2003, Obata was ranked 68 and reached her first ever WTA Semi-final at Bali. November of ’03 saw the Tokyo Girl reach her first ever doubles at Pattaya City where she entered with the rank of 52. Going by her high self standards and the intense competition, it’s handy to suppose that Obata may just be gunning for the Indian Open to debut her inroad towards a WTA Title.
Obata is coached by Tim Nichols, has two sisters and has a great time on the town in a karaoke lounge.
