Having just claimed her first US title after a four-week long coaching stint with Boris Becker’s former coach Bob Brett at the Boca Raton Classic Women’s ITF tournament in Florida Sania has bagged a grand 7 ITF titles for her mantle. This is Sania’s second WTA Tour entry, the last being her debut entry at Hyderabad last year where she performed extremely well.

Sania Mirza is the first women’s tennis player to be a household name in India and is poised to become the first ever major international women’s tennis star from India. Sania’s first milestone was the No.1 Junior title in India, which she achieved with consummate ease. She was selected as part of the Indian delegation to the Busan Asian Games where she earned the distinction of becoming the youngest ever Asian Games medalist from India. She then went on to become the National Champion breezing through the entire National Games to win the Gold Medal without losing a single set and reinforcing her dominance in India. This led to her being selected for the Indian Federation Cup team for the recent playoffs in Tokyo, leading India to qualify for the elite Group 1 level. Sania decided in 2002 to focus on international tournaments.
Sania’s doubles partner at the WTA Indian Open 2004 is none other than Lisa Huber, a master of double’s tennis with 9 WTA doubles titles and 11 ITF doubles trophies lining her mantle. The 27 year-old Russian has won over 800 thousand dollars in prize money pried mainly through winning doubles matches. Sania who has been working on her doubles game may together with Liezel hopes to excel at the WTA Indian Open and actualize her ambitions with a doubles win.
